Unique offerings for optimal healing.
Adult Psychiatry
At Expanse we offer adult psychiatric services focusing on conditions such as:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Trauma (PTSD) and other psychiatric disorders
- Substance Use Disorders / Addiction
Our psychiatric providers are experienced and well trained in the treatment of general mental health issues, mood disorders, trauma, addiction treatment and psychedelic therapies. You will benefit from a comprehensive evaluation and highly collaborative person-centered experience with ongoing care to support your needs. Our psychiatric providers recognize the value and effectiveness of combining appropriate medications and psychotherapy to effectively help you heal, based on the most up to date research. We offer a team approach in which psychiatric providers and therapists work closely together to provide the care you need.
Adult Psychotherapy
Expanse uses the principles of “harm reduction” to inform your care. This means that your needs are at the heart of our shared decision making. We understand that change happens over time and rarely follows a clear, linear path. We understand that recurrence is sometimes a part of recovery. We seek to understand all the complex factors that may be contributing to your distress, and we take the time to sort them out. We help you find a path that works for you. We are your partners.
Our therapists have masters degree level education and are highly trained and experienced in evidence-based therapies. Many of our therapists are also trained in treating trauma, using modalities that include EMDR, Brainspotting, Psychedelic Somatic Therapy, CBT, Narrative and Prolonged Exposure. See FAQ section for more information about these therapies.
As opposed to episodic, abstinence based “programs”, our individualized approach offers treatment tailored specifically to you, with ongoing care as you need it. Expanse is not a “program” – we are a clinic, providing care to you (and your loved ones) to help you improve the quality of your life. We offer hope – which is often hard to find.
Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy/Trauma Therapy
At Expanse, we recognize that trauma, early family relational issues and attachment play a significant role in mood disorders, anxiety, addictions, relationship difficulties and can have an overall negative impact on achieving a balanced and fulfilling life.
With the federal government finally loosening the restrictions on psychedelic research, there have been a plethora of studies showing the unique and rapid benefits of psychedelics when combined with psychotherapy.
Dr. Sawyer has been a pioneer in Minnesota, starting the first psychedelic psychotherapy clinic and in bringing the groundbreaking work of Psychedelic Somatic Interactional Psychotherapy (PSIP) to Minnesota having now facilitated 2 cohort trainings here, the most recent with the Expanse leadership team and staff . Expanse has positioned itself to provide this unique therapy, utilizing high fidelity somatic psychotherapy, which can currently be facilitated with either medical cannabis or low dose ketamine. We will also be ready to incorporate other psychedelics as they get approved by the FDA in the next few years. PSIP can help clients access the unconscious imprint of trauma and origins of depression and addiction, allowing the mind and body to let go of the autonomic nervous system energy, leading to lasting resolution of symptoms.
Psychedelic Somatic Interactional Psychotherapy (PSIP)
Psychedelic Somatic Interactional Psychotherapy is a high fidelity somatically oriented (body based) therapy used in conjunction with Ketamine, used “off label”, (or Medical Cannabis, for those who have state certification with a qualifying diagnosis; and MDMA and Psilocybin once they are FDA approved) which can facilitate the ability to tap into your body’s intrinsic trauma memories, process them, and let them go. As the well-known Harvard emeritus trauma researcher Bessel van der Kolk says, “The Body Keeps the Score”.

There is a profound empowerment from knowing that not only are they not broken, but in fact possess remarkable innate healing intelligence that asks for more contact, more self-intimacy, more embodiment rather than self-avoidance or management to achieve stability. What we see reliably arise from underneath the jagged, guarded, often hierarchically oriented, competitive and painful ‘I’ that we walk around with, identify with and protect is a much softer, much more alive existence of simply being in the world. A self that is aware, appreciative and loving of its own depth. A self that feels kinship and experiences empathy for the other. A being that is part of the world, that gains meaning and inherent worth simply by participating in existence, that is existentially and viscerally reconciled with the mystery.

Group Therapy
Expanse will be adding group therapy for individuals who appreciate group support, education, integration, and the chance to learn from others. Groups also provide a great opportunity to build connections/community. Talk with your primary counselor about group opportunities.
Family/Concerned Other Counseling
Expanse can integrate your family and concerned others into your therapy if that is something you desire. We also have therapists who can work with your family members individually or in groups as needed.
Family/Concerned Other Support and Education
Expanse offers family/concerned others support and education using a model of care based on CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) principles and strategies.
Drs. Robert J. Meyers and Jane Ellen Smith of the University of New Mexico developed the CRAFT program to teach families how to impact their loved one while avoiding both detachment and confrontation. Randomized clinical trials have shown CRAFT to be three to five times better at engaging people who resist getting help for their substance use problems than Al-Anon or more traditional interventions. Research has also shown that people who attend the CRAFT program personally benefit by becoming more independent and reduce their depression, anxiety and anger symptoms.

TeleHealth Services
Join your TeleHealth Session »
The Covid-19 pandemic, starting in 2020, created some significant barriers to care. However, one of the benefits of this, has been a loosening of federal and state restrictions on telehealth and a dramatic expansion of the use of telehealth nationally.
Expanse provides HIPAA compliant telehealth services to you when you are not able to come to the office for an in-person visit, or it is not convenient to do so. The provision of mental health and addiction services via video conferencing and other technologies enables you to maintain a personal connection with your psychiatrist/therapist and get the help you need no matter how hectic your life is or what transportation limitations you are faced with.
Although working with a psychiatrist/therapist through video visits might seem awkward or uncomfortable; most patients quickly adapt and find it an easy, efficient and effective way to access services when an in-person visit is not possible.
You can use any device with a microphone and video camera (desktop computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone).
Telehealth services are covered by most insurance companies at the same rates as in person visits. All services are covered including psychiatry services, addiction psychiatry, Suboxone, and psychotherapy. However, there may be some limitations on certain controlled medications being prescribed through telehealth visits.
